in comparizon to the Central State Library in Sector 17 the State Library is quite younger. It was established on 14th August 1995, forty years after the establishment of the Central State Library. The establishment of this library is attributed to the ever growing population of the city, unprecendeted development of adjoining satellite cities of Mohali and Panchkula and the inability of the existing Central State Library in meeting the needs of the readers.
The library was started with a collection of mere 5000 books. Of these 2000 were donated by the Central State Library and 3000 were contributions from the patrons. Over the years the library collection has multiplied more than 19 times.
Now the library is expanding its horizons both internally and externally. It started its services with two more branches, one in Sector 41, Bagheri and another one a reading hall in Budail.
